Setting: a place

Setting: an action

How can images connect or distance people from the natural world? Six sets of shoe-shaped plywood moved throughout the US to learn more. The patterns engraved into these plywood soles mimic the forms of visible plant life in the Iowa winter. This specific impression is of a prairie flower found at Krumm Nature Preserve, a restored prairie space about five miles outside of Grinnell, Iowa.

After mailing out sets of soles, I asked people to make prints by stepping on them. Instead of asking for pristine images made with a printing press, these woodblocks make marks specific to our own bodies and the spaces that we move throughout. The following media records the collaborative results from the soles.

Thank you to Ivy, Sarah, Phil, Andy, Kristi and Carol for making these marks.
